CHAPTER :SPORTS IN HARYANA

Haryana is one of the leading states in sports activities. Sportspersons of Haryana got fame at world level in many sports. They also represent the country at world level. The youths of Haryana have interest, attraction and enthusiasm towards sports.

Famous Sports of Haryana

Some of the important sports of Haryana are discussed below:

Athletics

Haryana has many athletes which made the state proud by winning medals for the country. Haryana State Athletics Association (HSAA) which was founded in 1967, is working for the promotion of athletes and athletics in the state.

Important athletes of Haryana are Deepa Malik (Para athlete) and Narender Ranbir (Para athlete) in Javelin Throw, Seema Punia Antil and Krishna Poonia in Discus Throw, Om Prakash Karhana in Shot Put, Chand Ram in Roadwalk, Manjit Singh Geeta Zutshi in Middle-distance running.

Some important athletes of Haryana are discussed below.

Bahadur Singh He was born on 8th February, 1946 in Haryana, Bahadur Singh is a former Indian shot putter. He won Gold medal in 1978 Asian Games (8th) and 1982 Asian Games (9th) and in 1975 Asian Athletics Championships. He was honoured by Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and Dronacharya Award.

Chand Ram He was born on 26th January, 1958 in Haryana. He is a former Indian athlete. He won Gold medal in 1982 Asian Games (9th) at Delhi in 20 km road walk which was a world record. He again made a world record by winning a Gold medal in 1983 Asian Track and field meet (5th) in 20 km road walk at Kuwait.

Deepa Malik She was born on 30th September, 1970 in Sonipat district. She became the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games winning a Silver medal in 2016 Summer Paralympic in Shot Put event. She also won a Gold medal in Arjuna Award in 2012 and Padma Shri Award in 2017.

Seema Punia Antil She was born on 27th July, 1983 in Khewda village in Sonipat district. Haryana. She is an Indian Discus thrower. She won Gold Medal in 2014 Asian Games.

She won Silver medals in Commonwealth Games in the year 2006,2014 and 2018. She also won Bronze medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games.

She was honoured with Arjuna Award in 2018 and Bhim Award in 2006 by Haryana Government.

Jevenial Throw

   After wining  gold in olampics in  Javelin throw  by neeraj chopra .  Javelin throw make special place in haryana its one of the most intersting game of haryana  district  . Neeraj chopra is one who introduce  Javelin throw in haryana district.

Neeraj Chopra

He was born on 24th December, 1997 in Khandra village in Panipat district, Haryana.

He is an Indian track and field athlete who competes in Javelin Throw. He won many gold medals in different games e.g. 2016 South Asian Games, 2017 Asian Championships, 2018 Commonwealth games and 2018 Asian Games.

He was honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, 2018. He was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony for India at the 2018 Asian Games.

Boxing

Boxing is one of the main sports in Haryana. Bhiwani district is known as the power House of Boxing. Haryana has a number of Boxing training centres which provide training to the national level Boxers. Bhiwani district is famous for Boxing.

Important boxers of Haryana are Vijender Singh Banewal, Manoj Kumar, Vikas Krishna Yadav, Sunil Kumar, Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar, Dinesh Kumar, Hawa Singh, Jay Bhagwan, Sandeep Golen, Girwar Singh, Ajmer Singh, etc.

Some important boxers from Haryana are as follows:

Akhil Kumar He was born on 27th March, 1981 in Bhiwani district. He won Gold Medal in Commonwealth Games in 2006 and Bronze medal in 2007 Asian Championship. He received the Arjun Award in 2005.

 

 

Vijender Singh Beniwal He was born on 29th October, 1985 in Bhiwani district. He is an Indian professional boxer. He won a Bronze medal in 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and became the first Indian boxer to won medal in Olympic Games. He won Gold medal in 2010 Asian Games and silver medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games. He was honoured by Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2011.

 

Manoj Kumar Kaltagedia He was born on 10th December, 1986 in Kaithal district. He is an Indian boxer. He won Gold medal in Commonwealth Games in 2010 and South Asian Games in 2016. He won Bronze medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Vikas Krishan Yadav He was born on 10th February, 1992 in Hisar district. He won Gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games and in 2018 Commonwealth Games. He was honoured by Arjuna Award in 2012.

Gaurav Solanki He was born on 21st January, 1997 in Faridabad district. He won Gold medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Cricket

Haryana state has a domestic Cricket team, namely, Haryana Cricket Team. It has appeared in two Ranji Trophy finals, first in 1986 and 2nd time in 1991 in which it won the trophy by just two runs. Haryana Cricket Association is the governing body of Haryana Cricket team and Haryana women’s cricket team. This domestic team has produced some stars of the Indian Cricket team, e.g. Kapil Dev. Important cricketers from Haryana are Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Ajay Ratra, Amit Mishra, Joginder Row, Joginder Sharma, Ajay Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal. Some important cricket players from Haryana are discussed below:

Kapil Dev He was born on 6th January, 1959 in Chandigarh district. He was named by Wisden as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002. India won World Cup Championship in 1983 under the Captaincy of Kapil Dev. He has been awarded by Arjuna Award, Padma Shri Award and Padma Bhushan Award.

Joginder Sharma He was born on 23rd October, 1983 in Rohtak, Haryana. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler and captain of his state, Haryana. Sharma performed strongly in the 2007 Indian domestic season to bring himself into contention for national selection. Sharma found a place for himself in the 2007 Twenty 20 World Cup in South Africa.

Yuzvendra Chahal He was born on 23rd July, 1990 in Jind Haryana. He represents India in both One Day International and Twenty 20 Internationals. He plays for Haryana in Indian domestic cricket and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He is a leg break bowler. He made his ODI debut on 11th June, 2016 against Zimbabwe.

 

 

Hockey

Hockey sport has flourished well in the state. The ‘Hockey Haryana, a recognised State Association, governs and conducts all activities for both men and women hockey in the state. It organises many events of Hockey Sports like, Hockey Indian Sub-Junior Women National Championship, Hockey Sate Sub-Junior Men Hockey Championship, Hockey India Senior Women National Hockey Championship and so on. Important hockey players of Haryana are Mamta Kharab, Savita Punia, Bhupinder Kaur, Pritam Thakran, Kuldeep Siwach, Suman Bala, Jasjeet Kaur Handa, Surinder Kaur, etc. Some important hockey players from Haryana are discussed below:

Mamta Kharab She was born on 26th January, 1982 in Haryana. She is the former captain of the Indian women’s hockey team. She was part of Indian team which won Gold medal in 2002 Commonwealth Games and 2004 Hockey Asia Cup. She was also part of Indian team which won Silver medal in the 18th Commonwealth Games (Melbourne 2006). She has been awarded with Haryanas most Prestigious sports award i.e. Bhim Award and in 2003 with Arjuna Award.

 

 

Sandeep Singh He is an Indian field hockey player and an ex-captain of the Indian National Team. He was born on 27th February, 1986 in Shahabad town in Kurukshetra. He is a penalty corner specialist for the team. He currently holds a DSP rank in the Haryana Police.

He made his international debut in January 2004 in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kualalumpur. He took over as the captain of the Indian National Team in January 2009. He got Arjuna Award in 2010.

 

Kabaddi

It is one of the important sports in Haryana in which there are 7 players each side (in two teams). Haryana Steelers is an Indian Professional Kabaddi team that plays in Pro Kabaddi League.

It is based in the city of Sonipat, Haryana. It also plays its home matches at the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai, Sonipat.

Important Kabaddi players from Haryana are Ram Mehar, Ram Singh Thardak, Sher Singh, Deepak Niwas Hooda, Anup Kumar, etc.

Some important kabaddi players from Haryana are discussed below:

Surender Nada He was born on 1st July, 1987 in Jhajjar district of Haryana. He is the Captain and defender of Haryana Steelers, the new franchise of Pro Kabaddi League 2017.

He represented the Indian National Team in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup held in Ahmedabad. He is consistently ranked among the Top Ten Defenders in all seasons of Pro Kabaddi League.

Deepak Niwas Hooda He was born on 10th June, 1994 in Chamaria village in Rohtak district, Haryana. He was part of the Indian team which won Gold medals in Kabaddi World Cup, 2016 South Asian Games, 2017, Asian Kabaddi Championship and 2018 Dubai Kabaddi Masters. He was also part of team which won Bronze medal in 2018 Asian Games.

Wrestling

It is the State Sport of Haryana. It has always been an integral part of rural Haryana. Wrestling sport has provided many renowned wrestlers to India which made the state as well as the country proud.

Haryana has become one of the important wrestling grounds of India due to the popularity of this sport. India got many Gold and Silver medals in this sport in many international level competitions. Important Wrestlers from Haryana are Gitika Jakhar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Gita Phogat, Babita Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Ramesh Kumar, Master Chandgi Ram, Suman Kundu, etc.

Some important wrestlers from Haryana are discussed below :

Lila Ram Sangwan He was born on 30th November, 1930. He was an Indian wrestler from Charkhi Dadri district. He was the first First Indian to win a Gold medal in Commonwealth Games, 1958. He died on 11th October, 2003.

Yogeshwar Dutt He was born on 2nd November, 1982 in Bhainswal Kalan in Sonipat district, Haryana. He is an Indian free style wrestler. He won gold medals in Asian Games 2014, and Commonwealth Games 2010 and 2014.

He also won Bronze medals in 2012 Olympic Games and 2006 Asian Games. He was awarded by Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2012.

 

 

Geetika Jakhar She was born on 18th August, 1985 in Agroha town of Hisar district. She won silver medal in Asian Games, 2006 at Doha, Qatar. She won Gold medals in Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, 2003 and 2005. She won Silver medal in Commonwealth Games in 2014 and Bronze Medal in Incheon Asian Games in the same year.

Gita Phogat She was born on 15th December, 1988 in Bhiwani district. She is the first Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games.

She won India’s first ever Gold medal in women’s wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, 2010. She has been awarded with Arjun Award and Bhim Award.

Babita Phogat She was born on 20th November, 1989 in Bhiwani district. She won Gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2014, and Silver medal in Commonwealth Games, 2018. She won Bronze medal in 2012 World Wrestling Championships.

Ravinder Khatri He was born on 15th May, 1992 in Haryana. He is an Indian Greco-Roman wrestler who competes in the 85 kg category. He won Gold medal in Sub-Junior National Wrestling Championship, 2007. He also won Bronze medal in 2016 Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Sakshi Malik She was born on 3rd September, 1992 in Mokhra village of Rohtak district. She is an Indian wrestler. She won Bronze medal in 2016 Rio Olympic Games and was honoured by Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2016). She has been honoured by Padma Shri in the year 2017, and also got Bronze medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games.

 

Sumit Malik He was born on 9th January, 1993 in Rhotak district. He is a freestyle wrestler from India.

He won Silver in Asian Championships, 2017 and Commonwealth Championships, 2017. He also won Gold medal in Commonwealth Games, 2018.

Bajrang Punia He was born on 26th February, 1994 in Khudan village in Jhajjar district, Haryana.

He is a freestyle wrestler from India.

He won Gold medal in Commonwealth Championship in 2016 and 2017, Asian Championship, 2017, Asian Games, 2018 and Commonwealth Games, 2018. In November, 2018 he attains number 1 ranking in world in 65 kg category.

Vinesh Phogat She was born on 25th August, 1994 in Balali village of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana. She won Gold medal in Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018 and Asian Games, 2018. He also got Arjun Award in 2016.

Bodybuilding

Haryana conducts many bodybuilding events in the state like Haryana Bodybuilding Sirsa, Panipat Classic and Mr. Haryana. Its sportspersons (Bodybuilders) also take part in the competitions of State level, National level and International level. Haryana Bodybuilding Association works for the development of this sport in the state.

Other Sports Personalities

Gagan Narang He was born on 6th May, 1983. He is well-known shooter who competed in three summer Olympic Games. His ancestors belonged to Samalka in Panipat district in Haryana. Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in the 10 m air rifle event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Manu Bhaker She was born on 18th Februry, 2002 in Jhajjar district of Haryana. She is an Indian sport shooter. She represented India at the 2018 ISSF World Cup and won two gold medals. She is the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup. She also excelled in other sports like Huyen langlon, a Manipuri martial art, as well as boxing, tennis and skating.

Abhinav Lohan He was born on 13th December, 1989 in Haryana. He is an Indian golf player. He won a Silver medal in 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Saina Nehwal She was born on 17th March, 1990 in Hisar district. She is an Indian professional badminton singles player. In 2015 she became the first Indian woman player to secure world no. 1 spot in Badminton. She won a Silver medal in World Championship, 2015. She also won Bronze medal in 2012 summer Olympic Games and Gold medal in 2018 commonwealth Games.

Famous Sports Organisations in Haryana

To promote sports talent, the following organisations have been established in the state:

Haryana Chess Association

Haryana Chess Association (HCA) is the official body for the game of chess in Haryana. It was formed in 1983, with the aims and objectives of spreading and promoting the game of chess in Haryana and is affiliated with the All India Chess Federation and Haryana Olympic Association. It is registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860.

Bhiwani Boxing Club

It was founded by the former coach and famous boxer of Sports Authority of India, Jagadish Singh, on 21st March, 2003. The co-founder of this club is Captain Hawa Singh. This boxing club is also known as a Powerhouse of Indian Boxing. In 2008, Summer Olympic Games, 5 boxers represented India out of those, 4 were from Bhiwani district of Haryana.

In Asian Games 2010 at Guanzhou (China), two Gold and one Silver medal is won by the boxers of this club. Important boxers of this club are Vijender Singh, Vikas Krishna Yadav, Jitendra Kumar, Akhil Kumar, Dinesh Kumar, Kavita Chahal and Dilbagh Singh.

The Hockey Haryana Association

The HH was established on 24th June in the year 2009. The Hockey Haryana is a recognised association of Haryana and is affiliated to Haryana Olympic Association (HOA) and Hockey India (HI).

The HH has drawn out a development programme for an extended period with the help of HOA and department of Sports in Haryana. There are mainly 6 teams in the Hockey Haryana (HH) which are known as- Men Senior Team, Women Senior Team, Men Junior Team, Women Junior Team, Men Sub Junior Team and lastly Women Sub Junior Team.

National Aero Sports Centre

Indias first aero sports centre was opened by the Aero Club of India, on 31st January, 2010. It is located on Bachhod airstrip near Narnaul town in Haryana. It is named as Rajiv Gandhi Aero Sports Centre.

Haryana Olympic Association

The Haryana Olympic Association is a body that works under the agency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to further the cause of sports in the state of Haryana.

Haryana Cricket Association

Haryana Cricket Association is the governing body of the Cricket activities in the Haryana and the Haryana Cricket team. It is affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Haryana Cricket Association promotes and develops cricket by conducting various league tournaments, tournaments for the age group Under-13, Under-16, Under-19 and Under-25 categories besides organising and conducting national tournaments.

Haryana Sports Development Fund

It was founded by the Chief Minister of the state, in order to provide a cash reward to sportspersons and athletes who won medals in National and International level competitions. It provides financial assistance to sports organisations, clubs and excellent sportspersons. It also provides financial assistance or pensions to outstanding sportspersons who belong to poor classes.

Nahar Singh Stadium

It was built in 1981. It is located in Faridabad. It is a cricket stadium which was earlier known as Mayur Stadium. The first match in this stadium was played in 1982 for Ranji Trophy between Haryana and Services Cricket Teams. As on 11th September, 2018, the stadium has hosted around 8 One Day International Cricket Matches.

Nehru Stadium

It was built in 1987. It is located in Gurugram. It is designed for football, cricket and athletics. It is a home ground for Haryana Cricket Team. It is also known as Dronacharya Stadium.

Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex

It was built in 2012. It is located in Rohtak district. It is a multi-purpose sport stadium for various sports like cricket, football, hockey, etc. It also has facilities for indoor games like basketball, badminton, gymnastics, handball, volleyball, lawn tennis, table tennis, kabaddi, etc.

Chaudhary Bansilal Criket Stadium

It was built in 2006. It is located in Rohtak district. The stadium came to prominence when Sachin Tendulkar played in his last Ranji Trophy match in 2013. Haryana Cricket Association maintains and operates this stadium.

Haryana Sports and Physical Fitness Policy, 2015

In order to encourage sports in Haryana and to develop sports related infrastructure, the Government of Haryana enforced the Haryana Sports and Physical Fitness Policy, 2015. In May 2015, Haryana Government has decided to include Deaflympics in its Sports Policy, 2015.

The main objective of this policy are:

  • To provide equality and encourage all the people of the state to participate in sports activities.
  • To encourage collective participation in sports.
  • To support the pursuit of excellence in sports.
  • To develop high quality sports infrastructure.
  • To encourage, train and support sportspersons who play at National and International Competitions.
  • To give stress on providing important facilities and development in Universities and Educational Institutions.
  • To create excellent sports culture by providing moral and ideological values.
  • To encourage youth towards sports, to identify sports spirit among youth and to provide awards to the excellent sportspersons.
  • To identify the specific needs of the sportspersons who are from marginalised population and provide them adequate facilities for their contribution in sports.
  • To encourage the adventure sports in the state.

Major sports awards is Haryana are as follows:

Bhim Award

This is the highest award of the Haryana Government for the outstanding players of the state. It is considered equivalent to Arjuna Award’. It is given to 11 sportspersons of the state and once in life. In this award, sportspersons get ? 5 lakh (cash prize), Bhim statue, a memento, a citation and Role of Honour. The awardees are also allowed to free travel in all the buses of Haryana Roadways for their lifetime.

Eklavya Award

This award is for the junior players of the state. The awards will be given every year to 5 junior sportspersons of the state; 3 in individual events and 2 in team events. The award will be given once to sportsperson of Haryana state based on previous two years achievements. The award will comprise of cash amount of? 1 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

Maharana Pratap Award

This award is for lifetime contribution in sports for men which will be given every year. The award will comprise of cash amount of Rs. 2 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

Rani Laxmi Bai Award

This award is for lifetime contribution in sports for women which will be given every year. The award will comprise of cash amount of Rs. 2 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

Guru Vashisht Award

This is an annual award for coaches. It will be given to one outstanding coach whether working in the government or in private sector for the exemplary service rendered for excellence in sports. The award will comprise of cash amount of Rs. 2 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

Vikramaditya Award

This is an annual award for an outstanding referee/umpire/judge which would be given every year. The award will comprise of cash amount of Rs. 2 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

Award for Physical Education Teacher, PTI and DPE

This award is for one best performing physical education teacher who has played exemplary role in promotion of sports in the educational institutions. It will be given on annual basis. The award will comprise of cash amount of Rs.1 lakh, memento, scroll, blazer and tie/scarf.

 

Haryana at International Level

Summer Youth Olympics, 2018

These games were held from 6th to 18th October, 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. India won total 13 medals in these games (3 Gold, 9 Silver, 1 Bronze) and got 17th rank in the medal list. Manu Bhaker, an Indian sport shooter from Haryana, won Gold medal and became the first Indian girl to win a gold medal in these games. Akash Malik, an Indian Sport archer from Haryana, won India’s first Silver-medal in archery in these games.

18th Asian Games, 2018

These games were held from 18th August to 2nd September, 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. In these games, India won total 69 medals, (15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze). Out of the total medals, players belonging from Haryana won 17 medals (5 Gold, 5 Silver and 8 Bronze medals).

  • Gold medal winners are Manjit Singh in 800 metres, Neeraj Chopra in Javelin Throw, Amit in Boxing and Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat in wrestling.
  • Silver medal winners are Lakshay Sheoran and Sanjeev Rajput in Shooting and three teams including team of horse riding, women hockey and women kabaddi team.
  • Bronze medal winners are Seema Punia in women’s Discus Throw, Vikas Krishan in Boxing, Dushyant in rowing, Abhishek Verma in shooting and three teams including kabaddi, hockey and rowing team have won .

 

21st Commonwealth Games, 2018

These games were held from 4th to 15th April 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia. India won a total 66 medals in these games. (26 Gold medals, 20 Silver medals and 20 Bronze medals). Out of the total medals players from Haryana won 22 medals (9 Gold, 6 Silver and 7 Bronze medals) in these games.

  • Gold medal winners from Haryana are Bajrang Punia, Sumit Malik and Vinesh Phogat in wrestling, Vikas Krishan and Gaurav Solanki in Boxing, Anish Bhanwala, Manu Bhaker and Sanjeev Rajput in shooting and Neeraj Chopra in athletics.
  • Silver medal winners from Haryana are Mausam Khatri, Pooja Dhanda and Babita Kumari in wrestling, Amit Panghal and Manish Kaushik in Boxing and Seema Punia in athletics.
  • Bronze medal winners from Haryana are Somveer Kadian, Sakshi Malik and Kiran Bishnoi in wrestling, Naman Tanwar and Manoj Kumar in boxing, Deepak Lather in weightlifting and Sachin Chaudhary in powerlifting.

 

Rio Olympic, 2016

Rio Olympic or 2016 Summer Olympic Games were organised in Rio-de-Janeiro, Brazil from 5th to 21st August, 2016. India won total 2 medals in these games, out of which PV Sindhu (Badminton) won 1 Silver medal and Sakshi Malik of Haryana (Wrestling) won 1 Bronze medal.

Sports Related Development in Haryana

In order to develop sports activities and its infrastructure, the Government of Haryana is making many efforts, e.g. grants to sports organisations, training programmes, opening wrestling centres, yoga centres, sports stadiums, village sports centres, Khel Pratibha Khoj Joyajana, sports hostel facility, development of sports ground, sports awards, etc. Some of the initiatives for development are given below:

  • A Synthetic Track in Chaudhary Charan Singh Agricultural University (Hisar) and a Hockey-Astro-Turf in Nehru Stadium (Gurugram) have been established in the state.
  • The sports department of Haryana organises many state level wrestling competitions, e.g. District level Wrestling Akhara Competition, Zila Kumar and Zila Kesari Dangal.

The State Government provides 3% reservations in jobs of groups (C) and (D) to the International level sports medalists.
